BCUS - Bosniak Cultural Union of Slovenia
Description
The Bosniak Cultural Union of Slovenia (BCUS) is a non-governmental, non-profit, and non-political organization established in 1997 with the aim of preserving the cultural identity and mother tongue of Bosniaks in Slovenia. The Bosniak community represents app. 2 percent of the whole Slovenian population with estimated 40.000 members. It constitutes on of the largest communities with migrant background in Slovenia. Majority of this population holds Slovenian citizenship, however in recent years a greater number of Bosniaks have come to Slovenia as workers on temporary visas. Today there is already a third generation of Bosniaks living and working in Slovenia.
The initial objective of the BCUS has been to enrich the cultural life of the Bosniak community and present the latter to the broader public. In the last decade the BCUS has broadened its objective in to the field of education (empowerment) and civil action in favor of the qualitative integration of ethnic minorities, promotion of the intercultural learning and bridging the existing cultural gaps in Slovenian society.
Under the umbrella of the BCUS there are seven local NGO's that work on the preservation of the Bosniak culture and on promotion of qualitative integration into the local society. BCUS also has strong ties and frequent communication with other ethnic minorities of migrant background in Slovenia. BCUS is a part of the EXYUMAK coordination which gathers six most numerous minorities with migrant background in Slovenia (Albanians, Croats, Montenegrins, Macedonians and Serbs).
Our activities are carried out at the local, national and international level. There are four different fields of continual action: cultural events, media activities, representation of the community and advocating for its cultural rights and growing in importance the field of education with the focus on the school of Bosnian language for children and youth and the life long learning opportunities for elders. In these fourteen years of existence the BCUS has organized more than hundred different types of cultural events (concerts, literature promoting events, public debates, lectures, etc).
