Successful Implementation of the “Democracy Workshop” and Future Integration into the Organization in Berlin

The first implementation of the “Democracy Workshop” on September 26, 2024, was a great success. The event received consistently positive feedback. The open discussions and constructive exchange of ideas were particularly highlighted, fostering not only an understanding of democratic values but also creating a space for diverse perspectives.

This year’s theme was: What do people with migration and refugee backgrounds need for social and political participation?

The discussion focused on what prerequisites people with migration and refugee backgrounds need to socially and politically integrate into society. The event brought together experts, activists, and participants from various backgrounds to explore challenges and solutions.

Key topics of the discussion included access to education and language courses, which are considered fundamental for successful integration and participation. It was emphasized that language skills are crucial not only for the job market but also for political participation and access to information. The legal framework, such as access to citizenship and associated rights like the right to vote, was also discussed.

Another important point was social participation. It was highlighted that many people with migration and refugee backgrounds face structural barriers, such as access to the job market or housing. The event made it clear that many of these individuals face significant challenges in the housing market, including discrimination, high rents, and lack of networks. These barriers not only make it difficult to find secure housing but also hinder social participation and political engagement. Insecure and/or lack of housing often leads to isolation and makes it difficult to access information necessary for political participation.

Discrimination and prejudice in society also pose significant obstacles.

The discussion showed that targeted political programs and support services are necessary to address these challenges. Recommendations included promoting participation projects specifically tailored to this target group, better representation in political institutions, and expanding advisory and integration services.

In conclusion, participants emphasized that successful social and political participation of people with migration and refugee backgrounds not only strengthens their integration but also makes a valuable contribution to a diverse and democratic society.

Due to the positive feedback and impact of the event, the organization has decided to make the “Democracy Workshop” a permanent part of its program. In the future, moveGLOBAL e.V. aims to hold this format regularly and continue to contribute to raising awareness of political participation and democracy.
